چکیده

Heat transfer across metal-dielectric interfaces involves transport of electrons and phonons accomplished either by coupling between phonons in metal and dielectric or by coupling between electrons in metal and phonons in dielectric. In this work, we investigate heat transfer across metal-dielectric interfaces during ultrafast-laser heating of thin metal films coated on dielectric substrates. By employing ultrafast-laser heating that creates strong thermal nonequilibrium between electrons and phonons in metal, it is possible to isolate the effect of the direct electron–phonon coupling across the interface and thus facilitate its study. Transient thermo-reflectance measurements using femtosecond laser pulses are performed on Au–Si samples while the simulation results based on a twotemperature model are compared with the measured data. A contact resistance between electrons in Au and phonons in Si represents the coupling strength of the direct electron–phonon interactions at the interface. Our results reveal that this contact resistance can be sufficiently small to indicate strong direct coupling between electrons in metal and phonons in dielectric. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4005255]

Thermoelastic Wave in Metal Induced by Ultrafast Laser Pulses

In this work, an analytical solution for thermoelastic waves in a metal induced by an ultrafast laser pulse was formulated in the form of a Fourier series. The two-step heat transfer model was applied to account for the thermal nonequilibrium between electrons and the lattice during ultrafast pulsed laser heating. The coupling between the strain rate and the temperature ®eld was also considered...

Ultrafast dynamical path for the switching of a ferrimagnet after femtosecond heating

Ultrafast laser-induced magnetic switching in rare earth-transition metal ferrimagnetic alloys has recently been reported to occur by ultrafast heating alone. Using atomistic simulations and a ferrimagnetic Landau-LifshitzBloch formalism, we demonstrate that for switching to occur it is necessary that angular momentum is transferred from the longitudinal to transverse magnetization components i...

Heating of TEM specimens during ion milling.

Sample heating during preparation of electron-thin specimens for observation in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can produce artefacts which invalidate observations. This is particularly true of two-phase materials such as metal matrix composites, for which sample cooling with liquid nitrogen cannot be used to preserve the substructure during milling. A series of experiments is conducted ...
